A dream envisaged more than half a century back by natives of Kannur has now taken wings with the inauguration of the airport. The news of the envisioned dream reached responsible authorities and the people through Mathrubhumi. Since then, Mathrubhumi was with the dream.
It was on July 1, 1958, a proposal addressing the central government for a sophisticated airport in Kannur was passed in the Kannur municipal meeting presided by the then chairman Dr K M Kesavan. The proposal was presented by T Muhammed. This news reached the people through Mathrubhumi.
Later, the municipal council passed another proposal for an airport in Kannur during the tenure of O Shankaran, chairman of the municipality. V Bharathan presented the proposal then. This also had made a headline in Mathrubhumi news.
In another occasion, then public works executive engineer KV Kunjimuhammed had raised the need for an airport in Kannur during a meeting of rotary club. Chief guest at the dinner event was C Samuel Aron.
Mathrubhumi also had published letters by readers many times demanding an airport in Kannur.
