Injured elephant calf recovers after giving medicine stuffed in pineapple
Idukki: A baby tusker which was critically injured after breaking its leg near Shivabanthi in Kanthallur panchayat is gradually recovering. The elephant was found injured on June 5. Veterinary surgeon of Munnar forest department, Dr Nisha Rachel, examined it after visiting the spot.
The medicine was stuffed in a pineapple and given to the elephant. Nine employees of Kanthallur forest range have been deployed to observe the baby elephant for 24 hours and protect it from the disturbance of local people as well as mingling from other elephant groups.
Currently, the elephant is taken care of at a place called Chandramandalam. The medicine was stuffed in a pineapple as it could not be given directly to the elephant. It suffered an injury on the right front leg. The swelling has reduced and it is now able to stand up on its own, says Kanathallur range officer S Sandeep.
