Hunter and Lovely to add strength to dog squad in Kannur
Kannur: Two more dogs have arrived to strengthen the dog squad of Kannur district police. Hunter (tracker) belonging to Belgian Malinois breed and Lovely (explosive detection) belonging to Beagle breed are the new dogs. They have been brought from Punjab.
The new dogs were brought in after Seeta and Bruno of the dog squad were shifted to the retirement home in Thrissur. There are currently 7 seven dogs in the dog squad including 2 tracker, 3 explosive detection and 2 narcotic detection dogs. This is the first time that Belgian Malinois breed of dogs have been part of Kerala Police’s dog squad.
Tracker dogs will be used for investigating murders and theft cases. They have been trained to identify and trace smell. Trainers said that tracker dogs will give clues about criminals, using their head and ears.
Beagles are used mostly to identify explosive items and for the security of VVIPs in airports. Beagles can easily get under vehicles and carry out inspections as they are short in size.
Civil Police Officers (CPO) Shyam Mohan and PM Jijeesh are the trainers of Hunter while Lovely is trained by CPOs CP Rajeesh Babu and KV Nigeesh. SI VV Saseendran is the officer in charge of the dog squad.
