Huge collection of money found in beggar’s bundle
Nilambur: A huge amount of money was found from the cloth bundle kept in the shelter of a beggar, who was found mentally unstable and later admitted to the Mental Health Centre in Kozhikode by police and locals.
The shed covered with plastic sacks was located near the Chanthakkunnu-Karulayi Road. A Marutha native rag picker found the coins and currency notes in the bundles, when he searched inside the shed. He approached the Home Guard on duty to get notes in exchange of coins.
This made the guard suspicious and he informed the police. Later, the police arrived and found money kept in small bundles and boxes. The currency notes were soiled, as they were too old. The police are still counting the money.
The elderly beggar reached Nilambur from Shoranur by train, years back. He had been living along the Chanthakkunnu-Karulayi roadside since then, as a beggar. Some volunteers with the help of police took him to the Mental Health Centre in Kuthiravattam a few days back. Presently, he is under treatment there. Circle Inspector K. M. Biju said that they are planning to give the money back after counting, so that the amount can be used for his treatment and other expenses.
