Highway median strip in Kottayam turns beautiful garden, thanks to these headload workers!
Kottayam: The headload workers would always wait for the bus coming from Bengaluru carrying flowers to pass through Baker Junction here. They would assemble near the junction to collect the scattered flower seeds on the highway, that fell from the running bus. The workers then planted the seeds along the two sides of the road and nutured it. The workers were curious to know what kind of plants, the seeds would grow into. They were taken by surprise when the sides of the road were completely covered with bright-coloured flowers in full bloom.
Delighted to see the result of their efforts, they decided to convert a barren median strip on the highway to a beautiful garden.
For over 30 years Anil, Radhakrishnan, Peter, Jeedas, Manoj and Jayakumar have been working near Baker Junction. They convereted the barren strip into a splendid garden and nutured it during the work intervals. Sunflowers are the center of attraction in the garden.
“It was great excitement for us to clear the weed-infested strip into a beautiful garden. We are happy to set an example for others’’ they remarked. The workers are also planning to create gardens in other median strips.
They are currently members of Kerala State Head Load and General Workers Association C.I.T.U. Union. District President of C.I.T.U V. P. Ibrahim and many other officials congratulated the exemplary job done by the workers.
