Having no shelter, 75-yr-old man lives in toilet for 7 yrs in Kollam
Kollam: Though ageing has affected Bhaskara Pillai's hearing, but he can speak. He replied with a helpless glance when asked about his stay inside a toilet. 75-year-old Bhaskara Pillai has been living inside a lavatory for the past seven years. The water closet is covered, but the elderly man has to spend the entire day in the room. Even his clothes and medicines are kept inside this narrow toilet room.
Bhaskara Pillai lives in the toilet behind the house of Shyamala in Poovanpuzha here. Shyamala's family knows him for about 12 years. When their house was old, Bhaskara Pillai was living in a small room close to it. But when the house was renovated, the room was destroyed. As the man had no other place to live, he started staying in the toilet after this.
Earlier, he used to go for daily wage works. But now he cannot work due to age related ailments. He depended on Shyamala and her family to survive all these years. After COVID lockdown was imposed, Shyamala was struggling to make the ends meet and Bhaskara Pillai also was put in distress.
As some volunteers provided packed food for Bhaskara Pillai regularly, he did not starve in the lockdown days. However, he has no idea how long he would have to stay inside the toilet in this old age.
