Guruvayur temple fire accident clocks 50 years on Monday
Guruvayur: On Monday, the fire accident at the famed Sree Krishna Temple here will touch 50 years. The incident had occurred on November 30, 1970.
Smoke was spotted at the southwest corner of the Vilakumadam at the Chuttambalam around 1.15 am. Within minutes the fire spread everywhere.
As the fire was to spread to the sanctum santorum, then chief priest Chennas Parameswaran Namboodiri gave permission to take the idol outside. Veetikkizhi Kesavan Nair took the idol outside which was the rarest incident in history.
The idol which was first taken to Koothambalam was then shifted to Tantrimadam and by afternoon reconsecrated (Punapradishta). By evening the temple rituals were back to normal.
Six fire engines arrived at the place to put out the fire by morning.
The temple reconstruction was completed in 1973.
