For 25 years, coconut shell means art to this man
Vannappuram (Idukki): If anyone visited Pattayakkudi native Gopalan's house, they will be surprised to see many sculpture and artworks made using coconut shell and wood. He has been making handicrafts using wood or coconut shell for over 25 years.
Gopalan said that he started making sculpture with the coconut shells thrown away by his mother. Later, it became his way of living. His craftworks include figures of eagle, parrot, owl, snake, peacock, fish, tribal arts and many rare forms. As people started appreciating his work, he is often invited for exhibitions at art shows and fairs.
Gopalan said that people are more interested in artworks done in coconut shell than wood. He said that these eco-friendly objects will help avoid use of aluminium and plastic articles we commonly use in households. His wife Vijaya, a teacher, and daughters Athira and Ardra also support him to continue with his artistic skills.
