First drive-in beach in Kozhikode remains on paper
Thikkodi (Kozhikode): The Thikkodi drive-in beach project, the first one in the district and the second one in the state to be included in the tourism map, remain in papers. Though District Tourism Promotion Councils (DTPC) has started it in 2015, the project is nowhere near completion.
Tourists and families rush to the place on vacations and festival seasons. The number of visitors keep increasing in this place. The broad beach in a 5 km long straight line is attractive for the tourists. The place in the shape of a port. Since it is surrounded by rocks, the beach is featured with feeble waves.
The 7-acre revenue land close the beach can be fully utilized for the project. DTPC officials said that the road to the beach, vehicle parking, and other basic facilities for the visitors will be arranged. Thikkodi is the place lying closest to Velliyamkallu. There is also a possibility for a tourism project connecting Velliyamkallu, Saragalaya and Akalappuzha.
During the rush hours, people regardless of age and gender go upto 200 metre far into the sea in the thrill of enjoyment. There are no guards present to control the crowd. Two years ago, one of five youths who were bathing in the sea had drowned. The locals, political parties and volunteer organizations have been demanding that lifeguards should be appointmented here.
