Kottayam: “The Fire force vehicle has to leave from the station within 20 seconds after receiving a call. We are expecting the call always. Anything will happen at anytime,” said Kottayam Fire station officer KV Sivadasan.
As the mercury level rises day by day, fire force personnel became more busy with fire mishaps.
Kottayam fire station has 13 vehicles including 6 fire engines. 71 people are working here in 2 shifts.
They have to face many challenges to reach the spot of accident.
With the scorching sun, barren fields and plots catch fire easily. The Fire Force receive more than 10 calls every day to douse fire in fields.
It is very difficult to take the vehicle to remote areas in Kottayam. We usually douse the fire in paddy fields and other spots in the villages by connecting the fire fighting vehicle through a pipe.
The fire force personnel have alerted the public on setting fire to harvested paddy fields to clear the weeds. They have issued certain guidelines too.
PWD has constructed four static tanks for Fire Force. The water authority is obliged to fill water in these tanks. But half of these tanks are empty.
The tanks are situated at Chalukunnu junction, Kanjikuzhi, Kottayam market and near Kodimatha veterinary hospital.
During emergency, fire force collect water from the buildings equipped with fire safety mechanism. Such buildings have tanks which have the capacity to store one lakh litre water.
Fire Force should get equipped with small fire engines like mini water mist fire tender to arrive accident spots easily. But such a vehicle is not provided to Kottayam fire station. These vehicles can easily control the fire.
Meanwhile, fire force alerted the people who are engaged in works like cleaning of wells in the summer. The department has issued a set of directions for the same.
