Family takes Covid body by mistake, returns it later; Chaos at Alappuzha hospital
Ambalapuzha: The Alappuzha medical college witnessed unruly scenes over swapping of dead bodies as a family mistakenly took another body home. On Friday, Kayamkulam Krishnapuram native Ramanan, (70), who was under treatment at the Covid intensive care category and Kumaran, a native of Cherthala, passed away. But the family of Kumaran took the body of Ramanan home by mistake.
Ramanan died by 4 in the evening and after completing the hospital procedures, the relatives came by 8 PM to collect the body. But even after 9 PM, the body was not given away by the intensive care wing. By 9.30 PM, Kumaran’s relatives brought the body of Ramanan in an ambulance and handed it over to them. Both the families took the body and returned.
Dr Sajeev George Pulikkal, hospital superintendent, clarified that the mistake happened from the side of Kumaran’s relatives. The confusions were sorted out by both the families. The body of a Covid patient will be handed over in a special bag. The relatives were shown the face of the body and then the body handed over. Also, an acceptance letter will be received from both the family.
