Elephant which met a tragic end after falling into well cremated
Kunnamkulam (Thrissur): The carcass of a tusker ‘Dhruvan’ which met a tragic end after falling into an open well at Kurukkanpara here was cremated in the presence of a huge crowd.
The carcass was lifted from the well after a 12-hour-long ordeal. It was then taken to Kodanad in a truck and was cremated after being examined by Konni Veterinary Surgeon P S Jayakumar. The doctor said the elephant died of a chest injury it suffered during the fall.
The right tusk of the elephant had broken apart and was later recovered from the well.
The 29-year-old tusker belonged to Kizhoor-native Abheesh. After being informed about the accident, Abheesh who is working abroad, arrived home yesterday night.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening when the mahout untied the tusker to fetch him some water. The elephant, meanwhile, wandered away to a nearby open plot and accidently fell into the 30-feet-deep well.
The rescue effort which started on Tuesday night continued till Wednesday morning. Local people too actively participated in the rescue operation led by forest officials, police, elephant squad and mahouts. A crane was called in to lift the body out of the well.
