Kanjani (Thrissur): An elephant ran amok during the temple festival at Thottupura. The elephant named Guruji Balanarayanan turned aggressive amid the festivities on Sunday evening.
It is learnt that the jumbo panicked after someone who climbed on the elephant’s back pulled its tail while the festival-related rituals were in progress at a house in Panthod. This led to a verbal fight with the main mahout of the elephant. Amid this, the tusker ran amok and entered the road.
When the mahout's effort to pacify the elephant went futile, the elephant squad members arrived at the place. One of them gave bananas to the tusker and tamed it. The mahout chained it in the meantime.
The two men who had climbed on top of the elephant’s back escaped by jumping onto a tree. Later, the elephant squad members rescued both by using ropes. The elephant was later shifted from the place in a lorry.
Police have charged a case for torturing the elephant and abusing the mahout. Police had to struggle hard to evacuate the public who rushed to see the elephant running amok. Following the incident, the traffic in Anthikkad-Peringottukara area was disrupted for more than an hour.
