E-waste dumped into sea washed ashore in Poovar
Poovar: Huge amount of plastic and electronic waste which was dumped in the sea was washed ashore from Poovar between Adimalthura and Thiruvananthapuram causing environment problems.
The waste was dumped in plastic covers and sacks. E-wastes are thrown into the sea and these gets washed ashore in the high tides. Food wastes in packets are dropped in human inhabited areas by birds.
Animal wastes and food wastes from meat shops and hotels are discretely dumped into the sea. Wastes brought in vehicles are dumped in the uninhabited area near Poovar. Natives of coastal area also dump the plastic waste and unusable electronic equipment into the sea. All drainages in these areas are channelled to sea.
Stray dogs which come to eat the wastes pose a great threat to the locals. There were incidents of natives being killed by the attack of stray dogs.
The waste washed ashore bring a strong odour in the area and attract flies and worms.
