Doctor takes care of 6-month-old Unni as parents get treated for COVID
Kochi: When Anitha shows the bright sky to six-month-old Unni, her face filled with motherly love and concern. However, Unni unleashes his signature smile and kept his face close to that of his adoptive mother. This unique bond was witnessed by three of Anitha’s own children, from outside the room.
Voluntary worker Dr Mary Anitha has been taking care of Unni, son of COVID positive couple under treatment, at Kalamassery medical college. Though COVID test was conducted, the child tested negative and hence he was forced to be removed from his mother.
On Tuesday night, the mother was shifted to another corona care center. Following this the child was also asked to be shifted to another place. As no family members came to take the child home, Anitha took him with her and shifted to an apartment in the city to remain in quarantine.
The child’s father, who works in Haryana, first tested positive for COVID-19. He got admitted to hospital and sent his wife and son to Kerala. Upon arriving, the mother also tested positive and was admitted to hospital along with the child.
“When the ambulance arrived, some staff wearing PPE kits handed over the child to me. At first he was so desperate to see his mother and for breast milk. He use to cry all the time. Slowly it changed. Now he laughs when I call him,” said Anitha.
Her three children waited in front of the window to have a glance of their mother. They had arrived to provide food for Anitha and Unni. Maushmi, the youngest of the three, is sad to be separated from mother, however, with a wide smile on her face said “Its ok. The baby needs mama more than me”.
