COVID-19: Fishing activities comes to a halt; fishes dumped in sea
Kollam: State authorities of Boat Operators Association stated that boats and canoes in the state will not be leaving for fishing activities till the coronavirus outbreak is contained in the state.
Most of the boats that left for sea have returned. The remaining ones are on their way back. In Alappuzha, since the health department ordered the closing of peeling sheds, prawns worth lakhs of rupees had to be dumped into the sea.
The Boat Operators Association President Peter Mathyas said that there has been a loss of Rs 2.5 to 3 lakhs per boat. The decision to shut all fishing activities comes as the government declared a lockdown and also because the demand for fish has come down. They also said that the boats were called back in order to prevent social transmission of the disease.
