Coastal police in dilemma over anchoring of surveillance boats
Kodungallur: The only equipment in possession of the coastal police for providing security to coastal region from Azheekode to Chettuva, is the boats for surveillance. However, the police are in distress over the safekeeping of these boats.
There are two boats under Azheekode coastal police station. However, there is no boat jetty to anchor them. Now during night, they are anchored near the National Waterway Terminal in Kottappuram, 5 km from the station and policemen guard them.
During day, the boats are anchored near the station using a temporary setup made of coconut timbers.
It was 10 years back, modern foreign-made boats were brought to Azheekode station when it was inaugurated. These are the only means for police to reach accident spots and for surveillance on sea.
It was two months back, the boats were recommissioned after maintainence works.
Fisheries department has also rented out a fishing boat for security reasons here. The authorities are also in trouble as there is no place to anchor it.
