Charity box installed by auto drivers turns one
Kottayam: Three auto drivers from the Darshana auto stand had reached the Kottayam Medical College with an accident victim when they met those two faces that changed their lives forever. The tired face of the woman and her child who stood begging in front of them that day is what ended in the 'Jeevakarunya Sahayanidhi'.
That day at the hospital, the auto drivers, Sajimon, Shibu and Ajayan met the lady who stood begging in front of them again at the canteen. There they found her sharing her meal with her child and carrying a packet of food with her. Upon enquiry, she revealed that her husband was on treatment after he fell from a tree. The three went back to their Darshana auto stand at Kottayam and shared the story with their pals and thus was born the charity box.
Charity boxes were fixed in the 10 autos at the stand. From Rs. 10 the amount deposited grew to Rs. 20 everyday. Passengers also contributed once in a while. Every month the box was opened and the amount was given to needy persons in Idukki and Kottayam. So far, cancer and cardiac patients and the poor at Gandhinagar Provident Home have benefited from this venture. They also distributed 50 Christmas kits.
The first Rs 12,000 was given to four people while Rs 10,000 went to one person at a later stage. In the following rounds, Rs 5000 was distributed to 12 people. Then Rs 3000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 were also distributed at different stages. Fifty Christmas kits along with provisions worth Rs 15,000 were given to the Gandhinagar Provident Fund.
The charity union turns one on July 21 this year and their first anniversary will be held at the Darshana Academy premises. The meeting that starts at 5 pm will be inaugurated by the Medical College Hospital Superintendent, Dr. T K Jayakumar. District Panchayat president Joshi Philip will preside over the function. The event will also set the stage for the distribution of Rs 30,000 in charity to different persons.
Fr. Thomas Puthussery from the Darshana Cultural Centre is in-charge of the Jeevakarunya Charitable Fund. U Baiju is the convenor and A S Ajaya Kumar is the Joint Convenor.
