Chakkiyamma refuses to leave her forest hut even in her nineties
Nilambur: From the day she could remember, Chakkiyamma’s home has been the forest surrounded by its thick green foliage.
The woman, in her late nineties now stays alone in her house at Abumala Colony. The colony is situated in the deep forest and is 14 kilometres away from Public Health Centre and 22 kilometres from the District Hospital.
She is not sure about her age, but says it is ‘around 100 years’. Her husband Velutha passed away five years back.
Both of them used to go to grocery shops nearby, locals said, though Chakkiyamma is unable to move around independently at present.
She lives with the food provided by her relatives. Though many organisations came forward to look after her, she just refused the offers as she does not want to leave her home.
She said though wild animals including rogue elephants used to raid the premises, none has attacked her yet.
