CCTV cameras non-functional in Kottayam town
Pala: Challenging police surveillance system, CCTV cameras installed at various parts of Kottayam town are out of order for a long time. Initially, the cameras were installed to identify people who dump waste in public places.
CCTV cameras helped the police trace the accused in many cases.
15 cameras were installed at 15 areas in the town. Kottaramattom bus stand, town stand, banks of Meenachilar and canal are the major areas where the cameras were installed.
Kottayam municipality has launched ‘zero waste project’ for effective waste management. As part of the project, the town was placed under CCTV surveillance system. Over Rs 15 lakh was spent for the pilot phase of the project. Many accused in crimes and people who dumped waste in public places were identified through these cameras.
But the cameras are under repair for a long time. Kottayal municipal chairperson Mary Dominic said that a private company was assigned to carry out the repair works of CCTV cameras. She noted that the work is being delayed as the company is not appointing staff due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
