Buffalo runs amok in Kollam for 1.5 hrs; dies shortly after being caught
Kundara (Kollam): A buffalo that ran amok in Kollam attacked passersby and vehicles. Passengers, police officers and fire force personnel sustained injuries. Though they could tie up the buffalo after 1.5 hours of long effort, it died shortly after this. It ran amok on Saturday by 9 am and was caught by 10.30 am.
The buffalo was grazing in the Ambedkar fields in Chathinamkulam and was scared by the honking of an auto rickshaw. The panicked animal ran amok and attacked three passersby. They were injured severely in the attack and sought medical help at various hospitals. The owner of the buffalo also was injured during the attempt to tame it.
Though people managed to get hold of the buffalo and tie it near Chandanathoppu level cross, it broke the rope and ran on the national highway. It continued to attack people and vehicles on the road. When the highway police tried to block the buffalo with their vehicle, it even tried to overturn the vehicle with its horns.
Kundara fire force also reached the place on knowing about the incident, but failed to tame the animal. Following this, another fire force team came from Kadappakada. Meanwhile, the buffalo was trapped in the net thrown by the fire force personnel from the top of fire tender.
During the attempt to tie it up, a number of fire force officers and a police driver were injured. They sought medical help. The police jeep was also damaged in the attack. The buffalo started running after hitting its owner Shihab. He sustained injuries on leg and back and was taken to district hospital. The buffalo died within minutes after it was tied.
