Bharathettan’s hotel fills the tummy and heart
Kanhangad: Bharathettan’s hotel may not be nice-looking, but one cannot stop visiting the place after having food from there once. The hotel has no name, nor a menu board has been placed there. Only ten people can barely sit in the hotel that has a few desks and benches. However, it always witnesses a rush.
The hotel, run by 75-year-old Bharathan and his wife M Kunjipenn at Kolavayal village, has been fondly called ‘Bharathettan’s hotel’ by the natives. Bharathettan sells snacks at just Rs 5 while the other hotels charge Rs 8 to Rs 15. Here, meals cost only Rs 25 and an extra of Rs 5 to Rs 10 for fish fries. People flock here daily to have his special snack, ‘pathal’, with chicken curry. The yummy chicken curry is priced at only Rs 15.
Even when the costs of groceries, fish and chicken are skyrocketing in the market, Bharathettan has not changed the price for the last five years. However, he is unsure how long he could continue with these rates as commodity prices continue to soar. When he shuts the hotel at 5 pm, he gets only a paltry sum as profit. Bharathettan has been running the hotel for a long 43 years.
