Arecanut pillars get ready at Neeliyar Kottam in Kannur
Kannur: Celebrating the rural heritage and agricultural prosperity, arecanut pillars got ready at Neeliyar Kottam temple in Mathamangalam here. This beautiful pillars were made as part of ‘Kaliyattam’ ritual observed annually at the temple.
This year, ‘Kaliyattam’ was cancelled due to COVID situation. Though, the ritual is observed under COVID protocol, the arecanut pillars were erected following the custom.
Usually, ten pillars at the temple will be covered with arecanuts. But this year, only five pillars are decorated with arecanuts.
As per the custom, over 10,00 green and ripe arecanuts are taken to cover the pillars.
The arecanuts will be taken from Kaithapram, Panappuzha, Kandonthar and Cheruvanchery village. As per the belief, the arecanut bunch should be taken to the temple without touching the ground.
The arecanut pillar will be made on the second day of the five-day-long ‘Kaliyattam’. Women who camp in the temple are in charge of the work.
At first, they segregate the arecanuts. Later, garlands will be made using the arecanut. These garlands of arecanut will be placed on the pillars one by one covering it completely.
