All candidates opt for 'mango' as symbol in Muthalamada panchayat
Muthalamada (Palakkad): Muthalamada is called the ‘Mango City’ of Kerala. Mango is the lucky charm of the farmers and merchants of the place. Due to this reason, mango is also the favourite election symbol for the candidates.
Three candidates who contested the polls with mango as symbol in 2010 elections were elected. Among them, S V Selvan was elected as president and S Amanulla became chairman of standing committee. With this, mango became a lucky symbol.
This time, Selvan is contesting the polls from ward 12 Idukkappara. Though he tried to get mango symbol, his opponent was allotted it. Congress candidate C Y Sheikh Musthafa’s son Salman Faris obtained mango symbol. Selvan alleged this was a foul play in order to steal the symbol from him.
R Aravindakshan, a mango farmer, had won the 2010 polls from ward 17 Parayamballam with mango as symbol. He is contesting this election from the same ward with same symbol. A BJP leader, Aravindakshan had started campaign with lotus symbol in the beginning, but switched to mango later.
M Thajuddeen, who won the election as LDF candidate twice before, is an independent candidate this time and opted for mango symbol. He is fielded in Mallamkulambu ward. He is also the chairman of the Mango Producers Company and chairman of the mango farmers and merchants’ association.
