Chalakkudy: Giving relief to the farmers at Poolani region in Meloor panchayat here, the agriculture department has initiated action to control the African snail menace.
The department has approved an action plan to prevent the snail menace in the meeting held on Tuesday.
As part of this drive, the department officials with the cooperation of farmers and natives here will spray copper sulphate solution on the areas where the snails are found. The efforts to prevent the African snails will be officially launched on Thursday.
According to reports, a huge number of African Snails are found in this region from last floods. The farmers complained that the number of snails is increasing day by day. Most of the farmers have stopped farming due to the snail menace.
The issue is largely reported from Kombanparakkadavu and Chettithoppu areas in Poolani.
Earlier, officials from Kerala Agriculture University visited the spot and carried out a study. The department has decided to spray copper sulphate solution in the affected areas as directed by these officials.
Though the panchayat authority declared the action plan to control the snails, it was delayed due to the LSG polls.
