Aged couple loses job amid pandemic outbreak
Varkkala: COVID-19 outbreak has shattered the hopes of this aged couple who was leading a peaceful life with a job in temple. Many people are struggling after losing their job which has become a common affair these days.
Chemmaruthy natives Damodaran Pillai (86) and his wife Subadra (78) are the aged couple who went jobless amid the COVID-19 outbreak. This couple were employed at Panaryara Thripporittakkavu Devi temple for the last 45 years. They were the helpers of the chief priest at the temple.
Damodaran Pillai started his job at the age of 40. Till the COVID-19 outbreak, the couple served the temple with dedication.
A small amount received from the devotees at the temple was the only income to the couple.
Collecting flowers, making garlands for the deity, blowing shankh (conch shell), helping the chief priest to prepare food for the rituals and cleaning vessels were the works of the couple at the temple.
They were engaged in the works at the temple until the priest leaves after ‘Athazha Pooja’.
Damodaran Pillai who is a good farmer also used to work in his farm from 11 am to 4 pm. Through agriculture, this family finds the major source of income to meet the financial crisis.
Though the temple administration committee changed many times, Damodaran and Subadra continued to work here for the last 45 years.
The aged couple finds the temple their world. While working at the temple, they reach here at sharp 4.30 am every day. Following this healthy routine, Damodaran and Subadra are not having any health issues at their old age.
But as the COVID-19 turned a villain, the couple lost their livelihood which they were enjoying a lot with immense devotion and dedication. As the government restricted people above 60 years from visiting temples and crowded places as part of COVID-19 protocol, the couple were forced to remain at home.
Damodaran and Subadra are completely disappointed as their lifestyle changed a lot after losing the job. The temple authority has already started to give a fixed salary to the couple after a new committee came to power. But as they are no more allowed to work here, they are having a tough time at their old age.
The couple have three daughters. At present, they are residing with their younger daughter Sreekala.
This couple turned a perfect example for people who suffer from COVID-19 outbreak.
