After 45-days of struggle during lockdown, fishermen return with good catch
Chavakkad: Fishermen who ventured into the sea after a 45 days long break amid the lockdown returned with a good catch of prawns on Monday. Fishermen who returned to the fish landing centre at Munakkakadavu here were happy about their catch.
A large number of labourers working in the fishing boats are no longer at Chavakkad due to the lockdown. Hence, out of over 100 fishing boats, only 27 ventured into the sea on Monday. Following the COVID-19 protocol, less than 8 workers were employed in each boat.
Prawns were sold to the vendors at a fixed price rather than auctioning it to the highest bidder as usual.
To avoid rush at the fish landing centre, vendors were allowed to enter after collecting a token. The boats were anchored here for one and half months amid the lockdown.
The fishermen ventured into the sea after the fisheries department issued an order permitting boats under 32 feet to go fishing adhering to coronavirus prevention protocol.
