Adivasi women take up fishing to fight hunger
Wayanad: Several households are undergoing crisis due to the ongoing pandemic and the arrival of the monsoon season. A lot of people are out of jobs, hence there isn’t any source of income for many. A group of women decided to take control of the situation and engage in fishing inorder to support their household.
Although they are provided rice through ration shops, they need supplies to make curries that go with the rice. This prompted the women to take up fishing.
A lot of these Adivasi families used to meet their livelihoods by doing daily wage jobs. Most of them do not have any kind of savings. The unexpected pandemic has turned their lives upside down. The women decided to take charge of the things when they were on the verge of poverty.
The women say that the crabs, which were once seen in rivers and fields, can no longer be found. They catch the fish from rivers, check dams and streams using fishing rods and fishing nets.
