Peravur:  Though the Central government and the state are spending crores of rupees for the welfare of the adivasi people, adivasi children here in Kannur are reaching the waste management centre almost on all days.   This heart-wrenching scene was witnessed at the waste managementl unit at Kunithala in Peravoor where children from the adivasi families reach here to take food waste from the trash discarded by hotels and bakery units, and consume it.

The waste gets disposed at this place from different parts of the district in a goods vehicle.  Spoiled food, rotten vegetables and fruits are dumped here.  And the hungry and poor boys salvage food from the garbage. The poor children segregate the waste and take it in a plastic bag. They sit on top of the nearby walls and eat unmindful of the health hazards it poses.

The scene of these children, who do not even attend schools and reach out to these trash bins for their daily survival, could even melt the hardest of souls. The hungry children leave their homes by crossing the walls at the time when their parents leave for work.
