Abdul Khadar, the revolutionary who fought against EK Nayanar and Pinarayi Vijayan
Kannur: Revolutionary Socialist Party leader Abdul Khadar, who contested against EK Nayanar, Pinarayi Vijayan and M Kamalath, is 92-year- old. However, his memory is still fresh.
He said that he was not fortunate enough to get elected to Assembly. However, all those who contested against him were extremely lucky. Two of them went on to become the Chief Ministers of Kerala and the other became a minister.
Abdul Khadar is a native of Irikkur. He studied only till class 10. However, he was a voracious reader from childhood. He used to read Kaumudy weekly regularly when RSP leader, K Balakrishnan was the editor. That is how he developed an affiliation with the party. Even then, southern Travancore was the party’s stronghold. Abdul Khadar worked towards increasing the party’s influence in the Malabar region.
Once, leaders including Sreekantan Nair and Balakrishnan visited Kannur and convened a meeting at Vichitra lodge. They formed the district committee and entrusted Abdul Khadar with responsibilities. That is how he became active in politics.
RSP was then part of UDF, consisting of K Karunakaran and Achutha Menon, in the 1970s. Irikkur constituency was a stronghold of CPM. RSP fielded T Lohithakshan for the Assembly election in 1970. However, he lost to A Kunjikannan of CPM. By-election was organised in the constituency after 4 years following the death of Kunjikannan MLA. CPM fielded EK Nayanar to retain the seat and RSP picked Abdul Khadar as their candidate.
He remembered that the contest was very tough. Minister Baby John camped at Irikkur for 2 weeks in order to campaign for Khadar. K Karunakaran and CH Mohammad Koya also took part in the campaign.
“MV Raghavan was the CPM district secretary back then. Raghavan was attacked during a public meeting. It was alleged that I sent goons to attack him. I was staying at Pappinassery then, after my wedding. Baby John ordered for police security around my house after threats were issued against me” Abdul Khadar remembered.
Nayanar won by 1800 votes in that election.
Khadar contested against Pinarayi Vijayan in 1977 from Koothuparambu. Pinarayi won the election by 4000 votes.
RSP joined LDF in 1980. He contested against Congress’ M Kamalam from Kalpetta. Abdul Khadar lost by 7000 votes from the Congress party’s stronghold. He did not contest in any other election.
However, RSP made him the chairman of various boards and made him active in politics. He started Kanannur District Muslim Education Society to resolve the poor state of education in the community in the Malabar region. This society gave rise to several educational societies including Taliparamba Sir Syed College. He is still the president and governing body chairman of the educational society.
