A real life ‘Sudani From Nigeria’, injured African footballer stranded in Manjeri
Malappuram: The story of Sergie Eric Koimi is almost similar to the movie ‘Sudani from Nigeria’. Unlike the footballer in the movie, the real life African footballer is going through some hard time following the lockdown amid Coronavirus outbreak.
Koimi from Ivory Coast in Africa arrived in Kerala to take part in the Youths Football Tournament at Kondotty. He was the player of FIFA Manjeri, a football team in Malappuram. He suffered a leg injury while playing in the tournament.
His life has many similarities with the life of Samuel, the Nigerian footballer in ‘Sudani from Nigeria’. Samuel left for his motherland after completing his treatment.
But unfortunately, Koimi is stranded in Kerala even after his surgery to cure the leg injury. He had planned to leave for his country after the surgery. Amidst this, the Prime Minister declared nationwide lockdown and all flight services got cancelled.
Now, he is worried whether he would be allowed to enter his country as he is returning from Kerala where COVID-19 cases crossed 100.
While Samuel in the movie stays at his manager’s residence, Koimi’s team has arranged a room with all the facilities for him.
In the movie, the character faced problems over the fake passport. But here, the real-life character is worried that his visa will expire soon. As per visa norms, he has to leave India by April.
Hence, Koimi has been praying for the success of India’s missions to overcome the pandemic.
At the same time, scientists predicted that coronavirus will spread in Africa any time.
Hence, Koimi is anxious whether he would be able to land in Ivory Coast even after leaving Kerala safely.
Responding to the unfortunate plight of Koimi in Kerala, Muhsin Parari, scriptwriter of the movie, appealed for help to the footballer.
“It is really sad that Koimi has experienced the same fate as Samuel in ‘Sudani from Nigeria’. It is really disturbing to know that the story became a reality in one’s life. African footballers must take some responsibility for Koimi. The authority must take necessary action to help the footballer,” said Muhsin.
However, football lovers in Malappuram are expecting Koimi to return to the tournament in the next season.
