97-yr-old lady meets collector to complain against grandson over property dispute
Kozhikode: An elderly woman approached the district collector complaining that the village office is refusing to collect land tax despite having proper revenue documents. Koottalida Chedikkulam native Annakutty (97) said she will protest in front of the collectorate until she is served justice. Collector Sambasiva Rao assured the issue will be resolved in a single day and directed the village officer to collect tax.
First Deputy Collector C Biju enquired about the details of the case from Annakutty and relatives. Later, the collector held talks with Farmers’ Action Committee leader O D Thomas and assured action.
When they contacted Avidanellur village office, it was found that Annakutty’s house and land were handed over through Dhana settlement (Dhana Nischaya Aadharam) to her grandson Bobby and he handed her Rs 16,000.
Following this, the complaint was handed over to Vatakara Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) for further actions. The case is considered as per the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act.
Avidanellur village office has been refusing to accept the tax for 15.25 cents of land owned by Annakutty for last seven years. She bequeathed the land and house to Bobby, son of her youngest daughter Thressiamma, in 2001 on condition that Bobby will take care of Annakutty till her death. But Bobby drove away Annakutty from his house after three months.
In 2011, Annakutty cancelled the will and paid the land tax in her name. However, the village officer refused to accept the tax as Bobby has been paying the tax and residing at the property. Though she lodged a complaint in this regard several times, no action was taken. With this, she came to visit the collector in person.
Annakutty is suffering from age-related ailments and is unable to walk on her own. She is staying at her daughter Thressiamma’s house in Koorachund. Besides Thressiamma, Annakutty has two other daughters named Mary and Kunjamma. None of them were given any share of the property.
