86-yr-old Thirayattam artiste had performed along with Lalettan
Nanmanda (Kozhikode): Cheruvodu Balan started performing traditional art when he was just 19 years old and is continuing even at 86. He performed Bhagavathi Thira at Kurooliparambath temple at 19 and then became one of the major Thirayattam artistes in Nanmanda and premises.
Balan is the leading Thirayattam artiste in Thiyyakkothu Bhagavathi temple, Kiliyanamkandi Bhagavathi temple, Edannedath temple and many other snake groves and temples. He performs variety of Thira characters like Bhagavathi, Malakkari, Thalachillon, Paradevatha, Mudi Vecha Daivam, Guru Karanavar and the like.
A skilled Chenda artiste, Balan is son of Pandikkott Kunjiraman who belongs to the family of traditional art performers. Balan is known as P B Cheruvodu in art sector and is also a noted drama and makeup artist.
Balan debuted at the age of 15 as the character of Urmila in a drama titled ‘Kanchanaseetha’ under the banner of Nanmanda Arts and Sports Club. He was famous for playing female roles in the initial stage of his career.
Balan also got a chance to act with Mohanlal in Theyyam costume in the movie ‘Vazhiyorakazhchakal’. In Balan’s opinion, he is able to continue the performance even at this age because of the blessing of his ancestors and the deep passion for art and culture.
