75-yr-old Thrissur granny makes fancy umbrellas to stay active in old age
Guruvayur: When we pass through Kottappadi market area, many little fancy umbrellas can be seen on the buses and auto rickshaws there. Not many people know that all of them are made by 75-year-old Elcy, a grandmother loved by all here.
Elcy, wife of Kottappadi Chowalloor native Chacko, makes the fancy umbrellas using colour papers and hang them on the grill of their house. As the house is on roadside, the tiny umbrellas catch the eyes of passersby. One fancy umbrella is sold for Rs 10. The granny also makes hand fan using palm leaves, plastic robot, tiny cloth bags and similar craft works.
Elcy is of the opinion that she is not affected with diseases as she is busy making the umbrellas and other things. People feel tired and sick when they sit idle, she said. The granny is currently living with her youngest son Babu and his family. It is Babu who buys her materials required for making umbrellas and other stuff.
