Thrissur: A 7-feet tall statue of E. M. S. Namboodiripad, the first Chief Minister of Kerala, is getting ready in Thrissur. The statue will be set up at E.M.S square in the city centre.
The first stage of the statue, which weighs around 1,500 kilograms, is complete. E.M.S is sitting in a chair. His right arm is on his lap. One foot is placed slightly higher than the other. And there is a sense of calm on his face. The only thing missing is his trademark spectacles.
“Only E.M.S’s spectacles need to be done. Rest of the work in clay is complete. Then the statue will be covered in wax. Later, it will be moulded in copper,” said artist T. P. Premji, who created the statue.
The corporation is creating E.M.S square with an aim to introduce an open stage in the city similar to the student’s corner. The stage will be set up near the BSNL office on Pattalam Road.
Along with the statue of E.M.S , 15 relief works from his life are also being prepared. A copper coin with E.M.S’s face engraved on it will be set up on the stage.
“There are only a handful of E.M.S statues in Kerala. It was a big challenge to copy his physical features into the statue,” said Premji.
