57353 mt of pesticides used in India last year
Kasargod: Pesticides amounting to 57353 metric tonnes were used in the agriculture farms in the country in the previous year.
Though it is less than the 60282 metric tonnes used in 2013-14, there is an increase from the 45619 tonnes used in 2012-13. As many as 260 technical grade pesticides which are registered and approved by the Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee are used in the country.
The information was given to P Karunakaran MP by the Union Agriculture Ministry in the Lok Sabha. Technical grade pesticides comprise 85% chemical substances and 15% other factors. As many as 585 types of pesticides made from technical grade pesticides are available in the country.
Of the 260 pesticides, around 100 adversely affect humans and the environment. Many of them cause even cancer.
With the aim of protecting children -- who are most prone to its effects -- from pesticides, Dr Bruce Lanphear of Simon Fraser University, Canada, have launched a road show in India. They will tour Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.
