50 trained students help in coconut plucking in Rajakumari
Rajakkad: Students of Rajakumari Vocational Higher Secondary School are lending support to the coconut farmers of the locality which has shortage of sufficient labourers. Nearly 50 trained students, both boys and girls, pluck coconuts according to the demand of farmers.
The school earlier had taken on lease 1.5 acres of land for vegetable cultivation. Students’ preservation, harvesting and pest controlling of coconut trees in the 1.5 acres of land had grabbed the attention of people.
Earlier, coconut farming was widely done in high range. However, the shortage of coconut tree climbers and mites attack were setbacks for coconut farming in the region. Shortage of coconut climbers with knowledge in coconut farming also reversed the growth of coconut cultivation.
In the wake of depleting coconut farming in the high range, students of the Rajakumari Vocational HSS equipped themselves to support the farmers in the area. The group of students are now getting ready to organize various programmes to encourage coconut farming, including training farmers in tree climbing.
