45 km long defensive wall to be built in Ayyankunnu to deter wild elephants
Iritty: Ayyankunnu, the hillside village, needs a 45 km long defensive wall to deter the wild elephants that descend the Brahmagiri hills, from Coorg wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. Every year, wild elephants raid farms in 6 villages in the region and cause huge loss.
Presently, the only defense they have is the boundaries that separate the forest region and cultivated lands. Due to the severe protest from the natives, the forest department has formed a plan about the preventive measures to be built in the forest border. They have prepared an estimate of Rs 66 crores for building the 45 km long defensive wall. They are trying to implement the project by including it in KIIFB.
In a discussion held by Sunny Joseph MLA, it has been decided to resurvey the forest borders and reduce the length of the defensive wall. Also, they will attempt to implement the preventive methods through a private property close to the forest region in order to reduce the distance. President of panchayat, members of district, block and village panchayats, and farmers’ representatives checked the new recommendations made by the forest department.
