21 members of a family washed away in Pettimudy landslide
Munnar: 21 members of a family have gone missing in the Pettimudy landslide disaster. Three brothers, their wives, children and other relatives are yet to be located from the debris. As it has been two days since the tragedy occurred, there is no hope to get them back alive.
The brothers identified as Mayilswamy, Ganesh and Ananthasivam and their families were washed away in the landslip. Among them, the bodies of Mayilswamy and Ganesh were recovered. Search operation for the rest is progressing.
Mayilswamy and Ganesh were working as drivers in the forest department for 14 years. On Thursday night, both parked the jeep near a tea stall in front of the lane of houses and were having tea with others when the disaster occurred.
Ananthasivam was the member of Munnar panchayat ward number 1. The ancestors of the family had come from Kayathar in Tirunelveli for working in the tea plantation in Munnar about 60 years ago.
Nine members of another family also were washed away in the landslide. The family of Madaswamy in Kolamangai Chokramudi Estate including his sisters, their husbands and children were affected in the tragedy.
Two girls in the family were studying nursing in Tamil Nadu. They had returned home due to COVID crisis. The disaster hit the entire family one week after this.
