17 women woodcarvers to prepare Marayur sandalwood for e-auction
Marayur: Ending the male domination in sandalwood carving, women also have started working in the sector. A total of 17 women are engaged in sandalwood carving which is a skilled labour, thereby rewriting the history. They are carving the renowned Marayur sandalwood for e-auction purposes.
The women have proved that they can perfectly handle chisel, axe and other tools to work on sandalwood. Though some women had entered the job in 2004-05 period, they worked for only a few days. Each wood shaving collected while carving sandalwood is expensive. They have to be categorised into various groups.
While carving the thick portions of the sandalwood, the carvers need to be extra careful not to shave the wood parts. The tribal women who have expertise in this task are presently handling the job. They are paid Rs 330 per day.
At present, the women from Periyakudi, Nellippetti and Kummittamkuzhi tribal colonies in Marayur panchayat are hired for carving sandalwood. Marayur range officer Job J. Naryamparambil said that they can work as long as they are willing to work.
