13-yr-old girl falls into Kadalundi river as worn-out slab of Pallathingal bridge gives way
Tirurangandi: In a freak mishap that happened at Chuzhali in Moonniyur, a slab on the walkway of the Pallathingal bridge in Parappanagadi gave way and an eight standard student fell into the river. Luckily, the girl knew swimming and escaped with only minor bruises.
The mishap occurred on Saturday evening when the girl was walking over the bridge along with her friends. The girl after falling into the river immediately swam to safety and was helped by the local people.
As the Baakikayam shutters of the Kadalundi river was opened, the river was flooded. The slabs of the age-old bridge was damaged months back and the authorities have been showing a callous attitude towards this. The native people have been repairing it by putting gunny bags, stones and sacks as temporary measure. The slab was worn out and there was a huge gap. It was in this place the girl Shahid (13) fell into the river.
After the incident, local people offered a temporary relief and filled it. Many slabs on the bridge have given way and iron rods are protruding out from the concrete slabs. Though local people have informed the concerned officials about the impending danger to the hundreds of vehicles and pedestrians who cross the bridge, no action have been taken so far.
