Muliyar (Kasaragod): The ‘Mathruka’ Kudumbashree workers at Panur Maruthumula is busy making the Onam special sweets. The jaggery-coated banana chips (Sarkkara varatti) in Onam special kit is made by these Kudumbashree members in Muliyar panchayath. Kudumbashree members delivered two quintals of jaggery-coated chips to the Kasargod Taluk supply office within three days.
The chips are made under the leadership of C Kamalakshi, E Valsala, A Saritha, A Jyothi Rajan and K Santhini. A 100-gram pack of these chips will be there in the kit. 2000 packets weighing 100 grams each were handed over.
Earlier, this team had successfully cultivated mushroom and made value added products from jackfruit. Jyothi Rajan said that this is the first time that such a large quantity of jaggery-coated chips has been made. So, they relied on YouTube videos for clearing doubts. They had to buy ingredients frequently.
"The banana was initially bought at Rs 30 per kg and later at Rs 37 and Rs 41 per kg. That has increased the cost of production," said Jyothi Rajan. SupplyCo bought the chips from them for Rs 26 per 100 grams.
