'Idichukuthi Sambharam' fades into memories after demise of Sivaraman Pillai
Mavelikkara (Alappuzha): With the demise of Olakettiambalam native Sivaraman Pillai (74), the people have lost the taste of the famous 'Idichukuthi Sambharam' which has been his trademark beverage for the past 45 years.
Sivaraman has been selling Sambharam, spicy lime juice and bananas in a stall close to the compound of Mavelikkara block office. He became popular for his unique Sambharam recipe and the style of making it. He takes 10 minutes to prepare the special item.
First, glass is washed multiple times and he puts salt, chilli and chopped ginger in it. Then he crushes them with a wooden piece in a special rhythm. Then some shallots and curry leaves are added before continuing the crushing. After this, thick buttermilk and ice is mixed to it. The mixture is shaken well in a special tumbler and the 'Idichukuthi Sambharam' is ready.
Different style and service
No matter which VIP visits his stall, Sivaraman always considers customers on first-come-first-serve basis. However, the people who drink the Sambharam once will definitely visit his stall again whenever they come to Mavelikkara.
Even after several new drinks like Kulukki Sarbath, Avil Milk and Fulljar Soda became popular, Sivaraman's 'Idichukuthi Sambharam' never lost its fans. His stall is always crowded with happy customers.
Also Sivaraman was noted for the way he tells the price of the items. He never tells the price in rupees but in paise. If the bill amount is Rs 12, he would say 1200 paise.
Besides, Sivaraman was unique in terms of hygiene also. He regularly collected the waste near the stall including those dumped by others and kept the place clean after sales every day.
