'First he slapped baby, then threw her on bed,' attacked newborn's mother narrates incident
Kochi: Mother of the baby girl who was brutally attacked by her father is silently waiting in front of the neuro ICU of Kolenchery medical college. When asked about the incident, she narrated the cruelty of her husband which led the baby fight for her life now.
The two-month old baby was attacked by her father Kannur native Shaiju Thomas (40) who lives in Angamaly. He was later arrested by the police. The baby's mother is a Nepalese woman. She cannot understand Malayalam. She said that her husband used to torture her and never allowed to go out.
Shaiju always tortured the baby claiming to teach her discipline. When the baby cried, he tried to stuff clothes in her mouth. Once he even pulled the baby down while she was breastfeeding. It was the sister who saved the baby from his attack once. Shaiju attacked the baby on June 18 by 4 in the morning.
"The baby kept crying all night. I tried to pacify her. She slept for half an hour and then continued crying. My husband hated hearing her cry. I told him that she is crying as she is ill, but he did not listen. He lifted the baby saying he would stop her crying. But she did not stop and he started shouting. First he slapped her on face and threw her on to the bed from where he was standing," the baby's mother said.
"With this, baby cried aloud and then became silent. When I looked, baby was struggling to breathe. I requested him to call an ambulance. He waited for a while and then took the baby out. We reached the hospital in an auto rickshaw. His sister was also with us. He was highly suspicious and even claimed that the baby was not his. Also he did not like girl child," she said.
"It's been one year since we married. We met through Facebook and married in Nepal. Due to suspicion, he never let me go out alone. He said that he worked as a teacher in North India and is now working as a hotel manager. I don't know the name of the hotel. But he has not gone to work since lockdown started. If he has money, he gets drunk every day," the woman said and fell into silence again.
