'Black kite' eagle befriends family in Kozhikode
Kozhikode: An eagle has befriended a family here in the district after a family member took care of the bird when it was injured.
The friendship between a ‘black kite’ eagle and the family of Thondimmal native Suneet started 3 years back. Suneet found the eagle severely injured after being attacked by crows on Agastianmuzhi road.
Suneet took the eagle home and took care of it by providing medicine and food. Soon, the bird started being friends with the family members. It started visiting the kitchen whenever it felt hungry and slept on the branches of trees in the premises.
The eagle's favorite dish is buffalo meat and can eat meat worth Rs 50 in a day. King fish and Silver pomfret are its preferred fish varieties. But, the eagle does not eat cheap fish.
However, ‘black kite’ eagle turned into a villain in the neighborhood after it started attacking local residents and snatching away their belongings. It even attacked Suneet’s father and injured his ear. The family decided to release the bird after receiving flak from the locals.
Following this, the eagle was taken to Puthiyappa where it could enjoy the company of other eagles. However, the family was surprised to see the eagle return to the house after 6 months. Similarly, it continued leaving the house and returning after a while.
The eagle was taken to Manjeri just before the lockdown in March. But it came back to the house after 8 months. Now the eagle has even befriended the one and half year old daughter of Suneet.
Each time the family took the eagle and released it somewhere, they had hoped that it would not come back. But the eagle’s affection has made them unsure of what to do.
