Victim's family pardons murderer; TN native's death penalty reduced in Kuwait
Kozhikode: The death sentence of a Tamil Nadu native man, convicted of a murder in Kuwait, was commuted to life imprisonment after the victim’s family pardoned the accused. The punishment of Arjun Athimuthu was reduced after blood money was paid to the family of the victim, a Malappuram native.
Panakkad Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal received official conformation regarding this from the Indian Embassy in Kuwait. He had undertaken the efforts to collect the blood money.
Arjun was awarded death sentence for murder of the Malappuram native that occurred following a verbal spat between the two, who were working in the same company. The incident occurred in 2013 September. He would obtain a reduction in penalty if the deceased’s family forgave him.
The victim’s wife and 13-year-old daughter were living in a rented home and were struggling to make their ends meet. The family demanded Rs 30 lakh as compensation.
At the same time, Arjun’s wife Malathi, was not able to collect more than Rs 5 lakh. This had made headlines. Following this, Malathi and father Durai Raju came to meet Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal and requested help.
With his intervention Rs 25 lakh was collected. This amount was handed over to Malathi by Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal at Malappuram press club.
Now, with the victim’s family pardoning Arjun, Kuwait government has commuted his punishment from death to life sentence.
