Dubai: BDJS leader and NDA candidate against Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad constituency in Lok Sabha elections, Thushar Vellappally was arrested in Ajman in UAE by police on Tuesday evening in connection with a bounced cheque case. He was sent to the Ajman Central Jail.
A dishonoured cheque of 10 million Dirham which led to his arrest, was given by him 10 years ago. However, sources close to Thushar said that he will be released soon after readying concerned documents related to the case.
Cheque bouncing case against Thushar was filed by Nazil Abdullah, a Thrissur native settled in Ajman, two days before. Thushar was unaware about the case. He was called to a hotel in Ajman from Kerala to hold a negotiation meeting on the cheque issue. Meanwhile during the discussion, Thushar was arrested by the police based on the information given by the complainants.
A company owned by Nazil Abudullah was the subcontractor under the Boeing Constructions, a construction company owned by Vellappally Natesan in Ajman. However, Vellappally Natesan sold out the company 10 years before as it faced huge loss. But Natesan owed money to subcontractor Nazil Abdullah. A bank cheque was given to Nazil to settle this. The case relates to this cheque which had not mentioned a date.
Though Keralite lawyers in UAE and social activists in the country intervened for Thushar, he wasn’t granted bail as complainants didn’t withdraw the case.
Close allies of Thushar also raised claims that a cheque given 10 years before has no validity. Efforts are being made to release Thushar with the help of some prominent businessmen in UAE. Since it is a cheque case, it is believed that he could be granted bail based on passport.
