Repatriation of dead bodies from Gulf countries now provided at Kannur Airport
Dubai: Repatriation of dead bodies by the Indian expat community to the home town in North Malabar through Kannur International Airport has been permitted. The decision taken by Ministry of health and family welfare to approve a health organization center at Kannur airport has turned out to be a huge source of relief for the Keralites settled abroad.
Despite a year after the opening of the Kannur airport, repatriation of the bodies was taking place only through Kozhikode airport. This only added to the grief of the relatives of the deceased. With the health center being set up in the airport, Kannur airport can now avail the facility available to 11 other airports in the country. The managing director of KIAL V Thulasidas said that the land and basic facilities needed to set up the health center is already available in the terminal building of the airport.
Earlier, a seminar ‘Emerging Kannur’ was organized and the need for this facility was strongly raised there by various organization. The seminar was conducted both in Kannur and Dubai. The seminar put forward seven demands to the central government including facility for sending the dead bodies of Northern Keralites to the airport.
The UAE chapter of Kannur Airport users forum expressed happiness in one of their demands getting approval from the Centre. A lot of International flights have expressed their willingness to operate from Kannur but the central aviation Ministry has not given their permission.
