Dubai: Congress President Rahul Gandhi arrived at the Dubai International Airport on Thursday for his two-day UAE visit which will begin on Friday.
Rahul arrived at around 7 pm on Thursday and was received by Congress leaders and members. Former chief minister Oommen Chandy, Muslim League leader PK Kunhalikutty MP, KPCC Working Presidents MP Kodikunnil Suresh, K Sudhakaran, MPs Anto Antony, MK Raghavan and N Shamsudheen MLA received the leader. A large crowd also had assembled here to receive Rahul here. Indian Overseas Congress President Dr Sam Pitroda was seen accompanying him.
Huge preparations and campaigns are going on for the two-day visit. Tight security has also been arranged.
The visit will commence on Friday at 10 am from a labour camp in Jebel Ali. A public meet organised at the Dubai Cricket Stadium on Friday evening is the main programme in Rahul’s agenda. He will also attend a face-to-face programme arranged by the Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC) in the afternoon.
On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi will interact with a group consisting of selected students and youth. From there he will go to Abu Dhabi where he will take part in the programme organised by IBPC and will visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is also known that Rahul might attend a function in Sharjah on Sunday.
Considering the particular situation in UAE, rather than a political meeting, a cultural meeting to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is arranged at the stadium on Friday in which Rahul Gandhi will be the chief guest. Sam Pitroda will preside over the function.
It is expected that a large crowd will take part in the meeting to be held at the Dubai Cricket Stadium on Friday evening. Oommen Chandy, KC Venugopal MP, Kunhalikutty MP will address the crowd.
The cultural meet which commences at 4 pm with the theme ‘Idea of India’ rooted in Gandhi’s ideologies falls at a time when UAE is observing the tolerance year. Rahul Gandhi is expected to address the meet on this subject rather than politics. Cultural programmes depicting the Indo-UAE relationship will also be showcased by hundreds of artists.
The Congress leadership, with a public meet, is looking at showcasing the NRI unity by assembling thousands of supporters here. From AICC senior to members of Indian National Culture Arts Society (Incas), a Congress-affiliated organisation in the UAE are working towards assembling a larger crowd than that was witnessed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here three years before.
