NRIs unhappy over indefinite ban on large aircrafts at Karipur airport
Doha: The Cultural Forum Qatar Kozhikode district expressed their protest on the indefinite ban on wide-body aircrafts at Karipur international airport after the flight crash.
Karipur airport is very useful for the NRIs from Malabar region. The passengers from Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad districts and some areas of Wayanad and Thrissur districts also find Karipur as the nearest airport.
Earlier, a ban was imposed for large aircrafts as part of runway development and it was lifted after continuous protests. Then the ban was imposed again after the flight crash occurred a few months ago.
International airports in Lucknow and Santiago in California have runways similar to that of Karipur and they continue to operate wide-body aircrafts with restrictions on the weight. However, the authorities are not even considering lifting of the ban soon.
In a survey conducted by the Airport Council International in 2012, Karipur airport was rated as the best airport operated by the Airport Authority in the country. It was also placed fifth in the list of airports that has highest income.
The Cultural Forum Qatar Kozhikode district committee requested the authorities to lift the ban of wide-body aircrafts at the earliest and to stop the actions that may question the existence of the airport.
